Free How to Make a Rope Hammock
When most people think of a hammock they have in mind of a traditional rope hammock tied between two trees. It is possible to make your own one person rope hammock by following these instructions on how to make a rope hammock and it can be a rewarding home project to work on.
Materials - Free How to Make a Rope Hammock
2 pounds of Hammock rope (Polypropylene is the most favored) 33" x 72" = 740'
1 wooden Gauge Stick 2" x 6"
1 giant Netting Shuttle 8" x 1?" x 3/16" thick
2 Hardwood Bars, 1½" x 1½", 33" long
2 rings, 2" - 3" diameter
Electric Drill 1/4" bit; 5/16" bit; rose bit
Knot loop - Free How to Make a Rope Hammock
Cut a three foot piece of twine and square knot the ends. Then hang the loop from a nail, hook or door knob.
Wind rope on to shuttle - Free How to Make a Rope Hammock
Load shuttle with Hammock rope and tie the free end to the loop that you have hung up.
Casting on - Free How to Make a Rope Hammock
Next you need to take the shuttle rope and make 20 loops evenly spaced out around the gauge stick (see diagram below), a half hitch is a good knot to use secure these.
First row - Free How to Make a Rope Hammock
After pulling the gauge stick out you need to rotate the work, so the shuttle is on the left side. Hold the gauge stick in your left hand, just under the work. Bring the shuttle rope down in front, up behind gauge stick, through the first loop, and around the loop in a half hitch. Repeat, through each loop in turn, evenly.

Second & subsequent rows - Free How to Make a Rope Hammock
For the second row rotate the work, so the shuttle rope is on the left. Proceed as for the first row. Repeat this until you have your required length of hammock, (fifty four rows make about seven feet).
Spreader Bars - Free How to Make a Rope Hammock
Drill 20 holes (around ¼" in diameter) through each hardwood spreader bar, 1½" apart from center to center and 2¼" in from each end. Cut forty 50" long cords, twenty for each end. Loop the first cord through a ring, thread both ends through left hand hole in hardwood spreader bar. Overhand knot through top left hand loop in hammock net. Fasten each cord, in turn, through bar to loops in net. Do both ends.
Side Braids - Free How to Make a Rope Hammock
Side braids are needed to let the net to sag in the middle so it holds a body snug. Make two 3-cord braids about 3" shorter than the stretched out length of the hammock net (one for each side). Thread one end through the outermost hole in the spreader bar and secure with an overhand knot.
Weave in and out through the outside meshes. Thread through the outside hole of the spreader bar at the far end, and secure with an overhand knot. This then needs to be repeated on the other side. This is the last step in this Free How to Make a Rope Hammock and the hammock is now ready for hanging.
