Make a Macrame Hammock

If you have the time, patience and creative flair, it is quite possible to make your own hammock rather than buying one. The advantages of making your own is that you can make it to the precise size and style that you require, and of course the sense of satisfaction that making your own hammock brings!

Macrame is a popular method of making hammocks (Click to enlarge)

A popular way of making a hammock is to make a macrame hammock. Macrame or macramé is a form of textile-making using knotting rather than weaving or knitting. Its primary knots are the square knot and forms of hitching (full hitch and double half hitches). It has been used by sailors, especially in elaborate or ornamental knotting forms to decorate anything from knife handles to bottles to parts of ships.

Common materials used in macrame include cotton twine, hemp, leather or yarn. When you make a macrame hammock your rope or cord should be thin, strong and slip-proof (so that when you tie a knot, it stays tied). Hemp is a good choice because it's thin enough to tie easily, the knots hold well and it's relatively inexpensive. Jute and cotton twines or light ropes are all very good but, while nylon is both thin and strong, it doesn't hold a firm knot without a lot of coaxing.

It is important not to hang the hammock vertically when tying knots. (Click to enlarge)

When you cut the cords to make a macrame hammock, the ends will have a tendency to fray. A quick way to avoid this is to lightly burn the tri-twisted ends together with a lighter, keeping an old rag or towel handy to clean the black "goo" from the ends. Another tip is to use a peg-board with 1-inch spaced pegs (or holes) when tying knots for the hammock, this will help to maintain even spacing. It is also important not to hang the hammock vertically when tying knots, as this will cause the sides to bow inwards.
