It is thought that they originated in Central America some 1000 years ago as one of the many inventions produced by the advanced Mayan civilization. So named for the hamack bark from which they were originally woven, these beds suited the hot, moist Central American climate ideally. They also had the added bonus of keeping the sleeper off of the ground and away from vermin such as snakes and scorpions.
Hammocks were used for trading between the different Indian nations of Central and South America. These extensive trading routes coupled with the fact that they were one of the favourite items traded meant that their popularity was spread to millions of the native people.
Shortly after Columbus came to America, the Bahamians were using hammocks for their afternoon siestas. Interested in this new contraption, Columbus took a load of hammocks with him on his return trip. From that, the hammock spread to Europe and the rest of the world.
Europeans particularly the British and the French saw how hammocks were ideally suited to be used in the cramped conditions of ships and so they were extensively used by these countries' navies. But these were a far cry from the airy, body-hugging sleeping arrangements of the Central Americans. European sailors were forced to wedge themselves into hot, sweaty canvas hammocks, jammed into too-tight quarters.
In the twentieth century the hammock became standard issue for another of the armed forces, the army. They were extensively used by allied forces during the first and second world wars and were later utilised by American troops during the Vietnam and Korean Conflicts.
